Davidson Weekly Bulletin 10/24/25

Principal's Message:

In our Friday Bulletin I often share activities and events that are happening on campus, but this week I want to share some of the work going on behind the scenes that parents and families don’t see, and probably don’t hear about from students, but it has a big impact on our children’s overall school experience.  Grading.

This week Assistant Principal Nieman and I joined other district leaders for a conference in San Diego about grading.  It’s a complicated topic with many areas to address, and for the past four years our Davidson staff has been doing a lot of work when kids aren’t in school ensuring that what we are teaching is important and aligned to the grade level standards, and supports the learning goals of future grades, our teachers have defined exactly what master means, and designed student facing rubrics that your children have, and will be seeing more of, to help them clearly understand the learning goals, and finally our teams have been aligning their assessments across the grades, and making sure that those assessments test our students on the material they were expected to learn, and we focused on teaching during the unit of study.

Moving forward the Davidson staff is going to look at some of our grading practices.  Some of our focus will be improving clarity for families, and areas of subjectivity that we can eliminate in our grading process. It’s ongoing work that we know isn’t flashy or fun to talk about, but an important part of the work our teachers and staff do at Davidson to provide the best possible experience for our students and families.

Counseling Corner:

This week, we recognized Know Your Classmates Day during lunch on Wednesday, 10/22. Students came to the library to play bingo, board games, and or catch a connection. Leadership students helped facilitate these activities and it was great to see students interacting with their peers! Additionally, our 7th grade students continued developing their self-awareness—an important, lifelong social skill. We explored the concept of intent versus impact, helping students understand that even when their intentions are positive, the impact of their words and actions may affect others differently than they expect. Through discussions and activities, students reflected on how their choices influence their peers and how being mindful of this can strengthen relationships and build empathy. The Signs of Suicide (SOS) presentations for 8th graders will continue through next week. Students are learning how to Acknowledge, Show they Care and Respond to their peers in need.  To see what else is going on this month and to continue the conversation at home, check out our page!

Wellness Nook: On Thursday of this week in the Wellness Center we had two service canine friends, Herbie and Shania and their owners meet our students and to discuss how these amazing dogs support  adults and children both socio-emotionally and with activities of daily living.  An interesting piece of research: Children who grow up with dogs tend to have  stronger immune systems, more developed emotional regulation and have enhanced social skills and general emotional intelligence.  View our students in action below as they connect  readily with these extraordinary canine companions.

  2. Students may not have their faces covered while on campus.  Masks and full face paint are not allowed.

  3. All costumes should be appropriate for middle school.  This includes age appropriate, and culturally appropriate and respectful.

  4. Knives, guns, grenades, and any other items that represent a weapon are not allowed on campus, even if it’s part of a costume.

San Rafael City Schools also has nutrition standards that we follow, and students should not bring bags of candy to pass out to their friends.  Please do not send your child to school with candy to give out on Halloween.
